In case you missed the news, The Vanguard—which just changed up its menu earlier this month and said goodbye to a few beloved items in the process—announced it would spend Halloween night dressed up as “The Cheatin’ Heart Honky Tonk Saloon.” The one-night pop-up event is the latest installment of the Bay View bar and restaurant’s annual holiday tradition. Previous iterations have found sausage joint temporarily taking the form of a Chinese restaurant, a seafood shack, a Seinfeld tribute bar, and an ’80s era comedy club.
On Thursday evening, The Vanguard will open up as an entirely new business and adhere to a country-fried concept, which will include a new menu to fit the night’s theme. Chicken Fried Steak
Breaded and fried round steak with country gravy, crispy onion, and mashed butter beans
Ham Sliders
Smoked country ham with red eye sauce served on freshly baked buttermilk biscuits
BBQ Pork Nachos (vegan or veggie)
Braised pork shoulder (or seitan) tossed in George Dickel BBQ sauce with sweet corn succotash, Cheese Whiz, cheddar cheese, pickled okra, and scallion served over corn tortilla chips
Catfish Sammy
Breaded and fried catfish fillet with remoulade, arugula, and house slaw
Nashville Hot Chicken (vegan or veggie)
Buttermilk chicken (or oyster mushroom) breaded, fried and tossed in hot oil served with white bread, house pickle, mayo, and “Dixie Dust”
Smoked Rib Platter
Smoked pork babyback ribs glazed with George Dickel BBQ sauce served with creamed green beans, house slaw, and corn bread
Grilled Cheese
Bacon, tomato, corn relish, and American cheese melted between grilled sourdough
